Dragonflies of Sri Lanka - #01 Yellow Waxtail

This relatively common male damselfly is Yellow Waxtail (commonly known as Coromandel Marsh Dart).
I have used Nikon D3200 with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens using Ferrania 52mm UV Macro filter. This whole image is illuminated by using manual white balance to reduce highlights.

The name may be derived from Greek ‘coen’ meaning shared or common and ‘agrio’ meaning fields or wild. Males have yellow tails while female have pale green. They are carnivorous throughout their life, mostly feeding on smaller insects. They breed in shallow water bodies with profuse growth of grass and other aquatic plants. The damselflies, which although less known than the dragonflies, are no less common. More than 1,100 species are in this family, making it the largest damselfly family.

Waxtails are found throughout the world and in Sri Lanka 02 species are known and 65 species are recorded in peninsular India. It is probably one of the commonest damselfly seen in Sri Lanka, very common along the banks of ponds, rivers and home gardens.
