Dragonflies of Sri Lanka - #05 Variegated Flutterer

This is a colorful golden yellow and brown winged dragonfly which can easily be mistaken for a butterfly from far away. I found it on on early morning in my garden perched on a top of a dry twig of a Delum, Pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), fluttering its wings to a strong breeze. It is male Variegated Flutterer dragonfly (also called Common Picture Wing). I was using Nikon D3200 already equipped with with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II LensAt first I tried using the Camera viewfinder and it seemed no to be working. So I used live-view mode to capture this dragonfly.

It is a prominent dragonfly of marshes, paddy fields and ponds. This species is easily mistaken for a butterfly. A weak flier and frequently perches on aquatic weeds. This dragonfly is rarely seen away from water. It breeds in marshes, ponds and paddy fields. Found throughout the year, especially near perennial marshes.
