Butterflies of Sri Lanka - #04 Tawny Coster

It was already midnoon, when I spotted this delightful Tawny Coster butterfly (Acraea violae) trapped inside my bedroom window. In order to capture the shots presented here, for your viewing pleasure, I used my Nikon D3200 with Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens. Thus, fixing a Ferrania 52mm UV Macro filter which resulted in a magnification of 0.182x, at the same MFD. And even though it is not quite the same as having the luxury of a 1:1 ratio magnification of a dedicated macro lens, it’s still decent enough to capture some stellar close-up shots.

And it is generally given a wide bearth by most predators, as it possesses poisonous alkaloids
(see Plain Tiger) in its body. The species is widely distributed across India, through Sri Lanka and is commonly seen on the wing, year round, equally at home in forest clearings and open country, though avoiding dense undergrowth and shady areas.
